On September 28, Interlegal will host an exclusive online webinar, “Wartime Compliance, Contradictions and Misunderstandings in Shipping,” featuring Edgar Martin, Head of Infospectrum Central & Eastern Europe at Lloyd’s List Intelligence and an international expert in shipping compliance and risk assessment.
The webinar will focus on the realities of wartime shipping and international compliance in relation to Ukraine. At the centre of the discussion will be how the war is changing risk perceptions and approaches to risk assessment, and how the reality of Ukrainian shipping differs from the way it is perceived internationally.
Edgar Martin will address controversial issues surrounding compliance and over-compliance affecting Ukrainian companies, as well as the challenges created by the use of digital risk-assessment tools. He will also discuss typical red flags associated with counterparties, errors in sanctions screening and misleading risk signals generated by digital screening tools. Together with participants, he will explore how stereotypes and misconceptions shape international perceptions of Ukrainian shipping and which factors actually influence commercial decisions and access to Ukrainian ports.

Edgar Martin has more than 15 years of experience in maritime compliance, due diligence, port management, consultancy and analysis across the shipping and international commodities trade sectors. In 2025, Infospectrum was acquired by Lloyd’s List Intelligence, with Martin heading its Central and Eastern Europe division. Before joining Lloyd’s List Intelligence, he spent several years as Port Director of Giurgiulesti International Free Port in Moldova and has extensive experience in maritime and inland waterway transport across the region, particularly on the Danube.
Today, as part of Lloyd’s List Intelligence, Martin combines his regional expertise with access to global data, extensive analytical resources and advanced digital tools. His professional background offers a perspective on the Ukrainian market through the lens of how it is assessed by international players and risk management systems.
