Interlegal organized the International Conference “Cargo & Marine Insurance”. Black Sea countries have not discussed marine insurance innovations at such a high level for many years and experts for a long time expected a similar unique event to be held especially in Ukraine. The conference awoke interest among insurers, traders, exporters, shipowners, charterers, lawyers and other international trade experts. On Friday, November 24, Gagarinn Hotel Grand Hole gathered precisely 100 delegates eager to study cargo insurance aspects.

Pavel Rudenko, CFTS analyst, opened the first session with “Review of cargo handling at the Black Sea ports” showing the full scope of cargo flows at the Black Sea market. Andrejs Radionovs and Dmitrij Igaunis, Marine Services Group (Latvia)/ Inter Hannover (Germany), highlighted the following vital issues in their report “Cargo insurance vs Liability insurance for terminals, freight forwarders and logistic operators”: key figures in insurance, what is the insurant’s risk, to insure or not to insure cargo and how to insure cargo for 2 minutes. Each presentation included professional and open case studies, since the conference delegates face such problems every day. In the end, David McKie, Kennedys Marine (United Kingdom) presented a report “Marine insurance – English law update”. During the coffee break, participants asked lots of questions to speakers.

Lachlan Morison and Tomas Ling, The Charterers P&I Club (United Kingdom), opened the second session with “Charterers’ Liability Insurance – it’s less expensive, than you think”, illustrated by sound case study. Karina Gorovaya, Interlegal (Ukraine), touched “Subrogation and recourse in Black Sea Region countries”, while Ufuk Teker, TURK P&I (Turkey), explained why being a local P&I insurer is a plus. In the end of the second session, Mehmet Dogu, Dogu – Interlegal (Turkey) highlighted the theme “Cargo shortage & Customs fines in Turkey”.

Following the lunch, Andrey Suprunenko, Remedy Law Firm (Russian Federation), and Andrey Perepelitsa, Interlegal (Ukraine), drew the audience attention to case study upon interaction of the parties in complex insurance cases, illustrated by the Black Sea region practice examples.

Pavel Svertilov, CIS Pandi (Ukraine) provided clear “Recommendations at ports of loading: view of a P&I correspondent”.

At the fourth session, based also on the Black Sea Region practice, speakers were Interlegal partner Natalya Myroshnychenko, senior lawyer Alexey Remeslo and lawyer Ekaterina Gadetskaya. Their presentation themes are vital for everyone: “Liability of the parties under cargo traffic at the port”, “Operations concerning export cargo passing the port/terminal before loading on board of the vessel”, “Terminal cooperation with vessel and shipowner” and “Cargo arrest by law enforcement bodies”.

Wide range of vital themes, case studies, interactivity, international speakers’ pool, high professional level of both speakers and participants – these are the brightest moments of the International Conference “Cargo & Marine Insurance”. We express gratitude to everyone – participants, speakers, media partners, since together we made this event unforgettable. We believe that this conference undoubtedly yielded positive results for everyone.
